problem
Most of us don’t learn enough about consent in school. In the United States alone, only 13 states mandate comprehensive sex education and 19 states require abstinence only education. Instead, most teach consent through simple phrases like “no means no.” As a result, extensive studies demonstrate that young people struggle to interpret what consent looks like.
our solution
Stories of Consent is an organization devoted to community-based consent education. By sharing personal stories about how affirmative consent looks and feels, Stories of Consent works to make consent education more accessible, actionable, and relatable to young people. With your support, this project can normalize consent as the bare minimum and describe what it actually looks like.
Stories of Consent is backed by LookUp, a 501(c)(3) social venture dedicated to helping young people thrive in the digital world.
our impact
We organize the stories of affirmative consent submitted to be accessible to the masses and relevant to researchers including us, as the data informs our Certified Peer Educator Training in partnership with SafeBAE which currently impacts middle and high school students across 45 U.S. states. Over 500,000 people have read the 160+ stories submitted from individuals ranging in age from 15 to 52 in 11 countries.
about the founders
Emily Bach and Maya Siegel are both survivors and sexual violence prevention advocates. They began working together in 2019 when they started Space to Speak, a digital project that blossomed into a community of around 3,000 young people, predominantly POC survivors, and raised over $118,000 for survivors experiencing domestic violence at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their work has been recognized by the U.S. Dept of State and the National Women’s Health Network. Stories of Consent is an extension of this work and their next initiative aimed at creating a safer world, online and offline.
